Ion exclusion chromatography columns for fructose syrup (2 x 60 m3).

Ion Exclusion Chromatography

The many chromatography units operating worldwide for the classical Fructose/ Glucose separation are based on the SMB ("Simulated Moving Bed") system, with 8 or 16 columns (or chambers). This is also true for applications for polyols separation, purification, or enrichment.

The ISMB ("Improved Simulated Moving Bed") process patented by Mitsubishi Chemical/ Nippon Rensui, allows equivalent performances with only four columns (or chambers) and several other advantages.

The purpose of this paper is to present the main features of this process, as well as the performances of the first European installation operating for two years for the separation of sugars from non-sugars with a Fructose syrup.
